White Papers
Recent innovations have made huge improvements in fleet management. Trucks, buses, taxis and other fleet vehicles are fitted with wireless satellite navigation systems that let dispatchers know the position, status, and fuel consumption of every vehicle, leading to great benefits in fleet operation optimization. Passengers are served as well. Display monitors provide entertainment, as well as useful, real-time information such as departure and arrival times, weather bulletins, and emergency notices.

Wireless LAN Communication System
Date: 2/22/2010

Industrial Communication
Location: Japan

Project Introduction
The biggest WiMAX telecommunication company in Japan, Hitachi Kokusai Denki, provides WiMAX service in seven major cities, and plans to extend its network coverage to 90% of the territory across Japan within the next few years. The most efficient way to establish transfer facilities for public wireless LAN is to establish them on rooftops of existing buildings. In the past this project would take a very long time and require a very large budget because it’s difficult to build such an expansive network system with standard power lines. To solve this problem, Hitachi Kokusai Denki has developed a new Wireless LAN data communication system, SINELINK 25G, with the help of Advantech’s new Power over Ethernet (PoE) switches.

System Requirements
When the Hitachi Kokusai Denki approached Advantech with the details of this project, they were seeking rugged and reliable Power-over-Ethernet switches with the following requirements:

  • The ability to support -40 ~ 75°C operating temperatures to withstand extreme environments
  • Ensures critical system operation through Industrial-grade designs
  • Guarantees reliable PoE networks with advanced management functionalities
  • Supports Redundant 48 VDC power input

Project Implementation

EKI-2525P 5-port Industrial PoE Switch with Wide Temperature

System Diagram

System Description
EKI-2525P PoE switches are connected to control rooms within the building, and then connect to SINELINK transmitters, (WiMAX wireless data links designed by Hitachi), providing them power and data through the Ethernet cable. This frees Hitachi from having to run additional power lines to the roof for the switches and transmitters. This elegant solution not only saves costs, but also significantly streamlines the entire system.

Conclusion
Advantech’s PoE switches are allowing this revolutionary system to be implemented across Japan with the need for installing thousands of additional new power lines as well. They also provide Hitachi the following additional benefits:

  • Reliable PoE capabilities allowing Hitachi to realize an expansive Wireless communication system
  • They work reliably in humid and dusty environments, under wide operating temperatures
  • Their industrial-grade design and easy mounting capabilities provides easy installation and maintenance
